Protecting Southeast Missouri’s Voice in Government

This week, the Missouri House released its initial map on how our congressional districts will be reorganized.  The map included changing the current dynamics of a rural focused district to a more urban and industrial focused district by expanding the 8th District to include the St. Louis region by adding 103,000 people from Jefferson County (see map below).  The House committee chair, who is from St. Louis and charged with redrawing the district has gone on record saying under his map, “you can make the argument that St. Louis has four” districts since the St. Louis region would now partially fall in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 8th districts.

Making Tomorrow Better Than Today

Saving Lives by Giving Blood

With a blood transfusion needed almost every two seconds and the average car accident victim needing 100 units of blood, there is a great need for blood in the U.S.  To meet this need, the American Red Cross plays a critical role as the nation’s largest single supplier of blood, collecting 40% of the nation’s donated blood and distributing it to over 3,000 hospitals nationwide.

Why I Am for Tax Credit Reform - Part III

Missouri’s past two state fiscal years have seen major revenue declines of -6.9% ($585 million) in 2009, -9.1% ($676 million) in 2010, and a projected future budget gap of as much as $755 million.  These economic times give Missouri a great opportunity to right size government.  Now is the time to take a long look at where we are, where we are going, and what must be done to ensure that your tax dollars are used effectively and efficiently.

Why I Am for Tax Credit Reform - Part II

Tax credits in Missouri have become a special interest redistribution of wealth, entitling those who receive a tax credit to receive that money first, before Missouri’s priorities are funded.  I believe this is wrong and is causing us to leave our children and grandchildren to shoulder the burden of these unfunded handouts.  This is why I am sharing over the next few weeks with you why I believe we must change our use of tax credits.

Why I Am for Tax Credit Reform

Education First

Over the next few weeks, I want to share with you why I believe it is important for Missouri to pass tax credit reform.  As I see it, the gauge of a person’s priorities can be found in where they decide to spend their money.  This is true for state government and the way in which your elected representatives decide to spend your hard earned tax dollars.

Spending Money We Don’t Have Has to Stop!

Requiring Universities to have Upfront Money Needed to Pay for New Debt

I want to share with you the purpose behind SB 200.  I believe state entities such as universities should not borrow money without first showing fully how they are going to pay it back.  You and I can’t spend money we don’t have; government entities should not either.

Ensuring the Integrity of Missouri Elections

The right to vote in a free and fair election is the most fundamental element of a democratic-republic.  Without it, officials are not accountable to the public, and if they are not accountable, there is no guarantee that our rights are protected.  This is why it is such a serious offense when a person or organization abuses this right.  In 2009, a worker for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) pleaded guilty to a federal charge for submitting fraudulent voter registrations. This is clear evidence that something must be done to protect the integrity of elections in our state and enable poll workers to verify that voters are who they say they are.
